<center><h1>Chapter 1 - New Beginnings </h1></center>
<hr>
Every morning Amalia would leave her house at 5 A.M. just so that she could enjoy the beautiful sunrise. She had a favorite hill that she liked to climb that offered a great view of the hilly plateau. It was a short 5 mile trek from the grassy meadows of her family’s farm and into the openness of nature where the grasslands were mostly brown. However, she liked being here since it was a great spot to just sit and meditate and be free of any worries or the busyness of life itself. She would just sit there so that she could feel the warmth of the sun’s rays touching my skin on my face. Most of the time, she sat alone with no company, just staring out into the great beyond.
After meditation, she would help her family out on the farm because her father was sick suffering from influenza. She would help move the haystacks around the farm so that the hay would not get soiled, which could possibly ruin the little livestock that we did have. She would also help milk the cows and clean out the stables where we owned a few horses. While her family did not live on a commercial farm, her father owned a huge lot of land that was a little bit too much for a small family of 3 to manage. There was very little time for socializing since most of the day was spent doing hard agricultural labor. That is why Amalia really needed her own time alone to meditate. And even if I wanted to socialize, there was not another farm for another 30 miles.

She was an only child. However, when her father was well, they used to sing together as her father played guitar. We would sing mostly old Irish folk songs like Danny Boy. However, Amalia still liked it, since her father would give her undivding attention. Her mother was a little sterner than my father but she was not totalitarian. She was just a respectful traditional Irish mother who did not except any nonsense or tomfoolery. However, she still read Amalia stories when she was very young. However, as her father became sick, it seems only her mother's stern side showed. Amalia thinks this is because her mother is really worried about Dad. However, change can occur when least expected.
One beautiful summer day in August begun just like any other day enjoying the open clean air of the countryside. However, as Amalia began to trek down the hill, something unexpected galloped slowly into her life.
A very distant sound of a horse galloping started to get bigger and bigger. Nevertheless, she kept walking toward home. Yes, travelers were very rare to see in these parts, but it was something not to fear. A young man’s voice called out “Hi there Miss, you would not happen to know where the Calhoun farm is? “ This was where she lived.
Is Amalia scared?
[[Yes|MansDescription]]
[[No|Impressed]] A very distant sound of a horse galloping started to get bigger and bigger. Nevertheless, I kept walking toward home. Yes, travelers were very rare to see in these parts, but I told myself there was nothing to fear. A young man’s voice called out “Hi there Miss, you would not happen to know where the Calhoun farm is? “ This was where she lived.
Through Amalia's peripherals, she could see a beautiful young handsome man riding a magnificent black stallion coming closer and closer. As they got closer, she could see it was a man in his twenties, very clean shaven and well kept, with dazzling dark curly hair that people probably would love to run their hands through. He also had beautiful hazel eyes that seem to be casting a magic spell on me. She could not speak. Heart palpitations started to rapidly increase faster and faster. It was not because she was shy. It was because she did not have much experience with boys. It even made her more anxious that he was going in my direction to my home. He was extremely attractive but she did not want to really tell how she felt or make it obvious that she thought he was attractive.
How does Amalia respond to the stranger’s question of the location of the Calhoun farm?
<<if ndef $notAfraid>>
[[Answer Rudely]]
<<else>>
<<if $notAfraid is true>>
Because she has reminded herself that she should not give into fear, this gives her the power to hold her composure and answer the question with high standards of decorum and civility, and therefore knows, that it would be childhish and deliquent to respond in a rude or unkind fashion.
[[Answer courteously]]
<</if>>
<</if>> Taken aback from the young lady’s response, the stranger claimed, “I am sorry Miss, if I was direct. I did not mean to offend you.”
“Well, you should not be pointing your nose, sir, in other people’s business. If you would not mind, I would like to be on my way now. I have duties to attend to.”
“I do apologize ‘mam. I did not realize I was being nosy. I was just lost.”
“Well, if you keep on going down this road here, it will take ya where ya need to be. Now, if you do not mind. I must be on way, sir.”
Contemplating about her own response, Amalia was hoping that she was not too harsh on the young man. Being a naive young woman, she still felt uncomfortable around strangers, even if they were as good looking and masculine as this man. Even though she acted daft around her family, she acted demure while in the presence of men. Notwithstanding her own justification for her own behavior, she thought there might have been a possibility that the man did not wanted anything from her, except directions, and therefore, was a modest just like herself. After all, she thought that the man was not hostile. In fact, she thought that he was very hospitable and apologetic. However, Amalia reminded herself that it was not good to have second thoughts about one’s actions and that people will not always react in an appropriate manner. In other words, she knew that there was no use crying about things that are in the past.

Amalia reminds herself that it is better to live life without fear, even if in her heart of hearts she may be a wee bit scared. However, she was taught that people, in general, should not live by fear or even entertain it, that is if they want to feel free, like in dreams.
Amalia holds her composure and does not give into her fear.

[[Amalia remains steadfast|MansDescription]]
The young man is quite impressed. He asks if she has every been there before. Amalia states with a gracious demeanor telling him that she has grown up on the farm and that is all she has known. Even when he asks if she is going in the direction, she says "Why yes?! Can I show you the way?"
She learns that the man's name is Jack and that he was going to work for her father. Quite shocked but still wanting to impress him, she states that having him around will be of great help to her father.
He says that he cannot wait to get started. He asks if she would like to accompany him to the house? Originally, she rejects the offer but after stating that riding horses offers an experience that can not be compared to anything else, she accepts his offer.
[[Learn about the ride home]]The young woman was a bit scared since this was her first-time horseback riding. She clung on to jack grasping him around his waist right after he tapped the horse’s thighs to increase speed to a fast gallop. The young man asked her if she could just feel the adrenaline going through her to which she politely responded, “I feel like throwing up.” He laughed out loud with his head slightly tilted head back making fun of her, but then he kindly stated to the young female that she would learn to love it once she got the hang of things. Amalia that thought this lad was nuts. While Amalia’s family owned a few horses for transportation reasons, she always watched her dad or a couple of his workers ride off into the sunset.
Jack was a country boy like how Amalia was a country girl. In other words, both never had been to the city or never knew what it was like to ride in automobiles, drive a car, go to the movies, or have a set of clean clothes every day. Most of the males in their life, including Amalia’s father, wore jeans or dungarees daily and the woman wore simple skirts. They also did not own lots of materialistic possessions, except Jack’s family was slightly a bit wealthier. However, none of them had a college education.
Amalia slowly stated to release her grip from jack’s waist but was still slightly holding on. However, Jack’s good looks and demeanor seemed to calm down Amalia’s anxiety.
Jack stated, “now you’re getting the hang of it.”
Amalia responded in a subtle fashion “Is that so?”

As they started to approach the farm, Amalia could see her mother waiting outside for my return. My mother greeted us.
Amalia’s mother Abagail asked Amalia “Why? Who is this young good-looking man you brought home with you? Gee, I did not think you were interested in men. You have never asked me once about boys before.”
Amalia slightly snaps back at her mother “ Oh, c’mon Mom. This Jack Harlowe who was by Dad to work on the farm.”
Mr. Harlowe responds “Why thank you Madame. I am delighted to meet your acquaintance.”
“This boy has manners! Catch him while you can. We do not get a lot of men here. Yes, there is my husband. But he is getting old….and how can I say it? Worn out.”

Amalia objects to her mother’s statements yelling out “Mother. You’re embarrassing me.”
Her mother says “Well…it is true. And your dad may not be here for any longer. You should get a boy now so we can have more men in our lives.”
“Mother!” Amalia objects. “He is here to help out Dad. That is it. Nothing more.” Amalia states as she rolls her eyes. She addresses Jack “I apologize for my mother’s behavior. But while dad has been indisposed lately, she has not been herself. She has been telling me about decorum and civility and now she cannot hold her tongue.”
“ I was only trying to be helpful” states Abagail.
Mr. Harlowe intercepts, “Ladies. Whatever the situation may be, I am here to be of service to you and your father. And I must say you two have been most pleasant. I think I am actually going to like it here.”
Abagail’s Mom stated that since it is his first day on the farm, she will give him permission to slack off a little bit. Looking at Amalia, she told her to show Mr. Harlowe around the farm a bit. She also said that she would like Abagail to pick up some crops, milk the cows, and to prep a chicken and turkey for cooking Thanksgiving dinner.

“You must join us, Mr. Harlowe. I plan to make a feast for tonight. However, with my husband indisposed at the moment, it would help out a lot of if we had a extra mouth to fill.”
Amalia motion over at Jack and said to him, “Why don’t you follow me?”
<HR>
Amalia and jack had fun with one another as she showed him around. Mr. Harlowe was quite impressed with the fact that she had no qualms about twisting the neck of the animals for thanksgiving dinner. And he would be right, since people who have never served in the food industry probably have no idea about goes on behind clothes doors. City folk just go out to expensive restaurants and have it served to them on a big platter. They might be more appalled if they were to see butchering of animals. While Amalia had never seen a cow or any mammal hunted and opened, she was used to cutting the head of a turkey or chicken without complaining. She was a farm girl after all.
When midday came, Mr. Harlowe asked if he could milk the cows for her. The funny thing, however, is that he had never milked a cow before. While his dad lived out on a farm just like the Calhouns, the Harlowe’s had no livestock. It was mostly crops. There was absolutely no barn animals whatsoever.
[[Learn about Jack's first experience working on the farm|FarmExp1]]“So Jack, if I may be so bold to ask, “why did you choose to work for my Dad? Don’t you have your own farm to take care of?”
“My Dad is still pretty young. He can take care of the farm himself. He is in his forties.. In fact, he liked the idea of me helping out other people. He said that it would help to take charge of my life. He had me just a year out of high school and got hitched right away. He was not thinking about college or any of that stuff, if you know what I mean.”
“Why didn’t he go to college? I mean, I was never planning on going to college. Well… that is not totally true. I was thinking about going to college. But then I learned that we as a family do not make that much money, so even if I wanted to, it could never happen. But I was always curious about this world. “
Right there and then one of the cows let out a big roaring “moo.” Amalia stated that Jack maybe pulling a little hard on the cow’s utters. She said that “you need to go slowly and be gentle. Let me show you.”
How should Amalia milk the cows?

Amalia placed her hands on two of the cow’s udders pulling down on one and then released it while pulling down other. She kept on switching back and forth between both udders, but very little milk was being produced. She thought to herself what possibly be going wrong. This was the way she remember, or it was at least the way she thought she had remembered.
All of a sudden the cow was in so much pain with Amalia just pulling at its udders that it finally sounded a big “Mooooo.”
Observing Amalia, he asked “Can offer you some little advice that I think might help you and the cow? It might help things to go a bit smoother for both of you.”
Amalia agreed.
“Instead of pulling on it like it’s a rope, just pinch the top with your index finger and thumb to hold the milk in the teat. Then with your same hand , use the rest of the fingers to slowly squeeze it like a ball. Now you try it.”
Amalia followed the young man’s instructions and was amazed how fast the milk was just squirting out just like water from a toy gun.

“Well, do not get your hopes up. I am a train wreck, and I would not want to mow you down. However, seeing as we are kind of like co-workers, I will take up on that offer. That is, of course…when you are not working. Well, I think should head back to the house now. Mom probably was wondering why we took about three-fourths of the day just to pick some food.”
Just as they entered the house, Amalia’s mother was not upset about them spending time together, especially when it would help Jack to know the place a little bit. She also said that since supper won’t be ready for another 5 hours that Amalia should show him around the house and to the guest room where he will spend the night while he works here during the week.

Amalia smirked. “I thought you were already a man?”
“Indeed I am. However, what they were implying is that someday they want me to raise my own family just liked they raised me.”
“I see. Well, I think I should let you alone for awhile to wash up and everything. When I first met you earlier today, I had no idea you would be such a gentleman. If I was rude or anything. Please forgive me.”
“Not a problem. If may be so brave to ask as well, would you mind telling me how your Dad got sick….I am not pushing you. I do not want you to feel uncomfortable. You do not have to”
“No. No, it’s OK.
“Well, if you do not want to discuss his health, we can talk about other aspects about your dad.”
[[How did Amalia feel about this?|AmaliasResponse1]]For some reason talking with Jack made Amalia feel comfortable. Maybe this was attributed to his good looks. However, Amalia felt like she could confide in him, even though he was still kind of a stranger. The warmth of his voice seemed very genuine. She did not feel threatened by him like other boys who have teased her or wanted something from her. They had a pleasant discussion about her dad how he used to sing songs and have fun.
“Just like Dad, I feel like I can trust you as well. There is something inside my heart that is telling me that you are different.”
“How so?”
“It is as if I have known you from another life or something or if I had already met you in a dream. I feel like I can be myself and do not see you as a stranger. I do not have to pretend to be someone else.”
“I did all that?......Don’t get me wrong. I am truly happy. It is just that I have not heard it from another person who is not family. I really am glad.”
Moments later Abagail called them down for thanksgiving dinner, however, little did Amalia know that this would be the last day she would see her father alive.

Amalia was enjoying every last minute of the holiday, but there was nothing that could have prepared her what would happen next. It had begun just like any other day. I would wake up super early right before the crack of dawn to go for my hike in the hills. I was 20 after all, so my family would allow me to borrow Dad’s pickup truck to drive to trail that took me from my favorite spot on the hill. However, just as I started to open the door, I could hear my mother crying out in agony “Nooooo!”
Amalia ran into the door thinking that something terrible had just happened. However, she thought that maybe a verbal fight broke out between her parents or maybe Mister Harlowe had something to do with it. Nevertheless, she knew that her father was really sick. Hence, it was sort of racing through her head that maybe her father did die.
“I’m coming mother. What is it?”
In my father’s library, I saw Mr. Harlowe, my mother, and a stranger surrounded around the diseased body of my father.
“Noooo. Why? You cannot leave us.”

<<audio sadMusic loop>>
<<audio sadMusic play>>Amalia’s mother was originally embracing her husband at first but then started to embrace the stranger. She continued to cry just rubbing her mucus and snot into the stranger’s chest. The stranger embraced her as well. I did not know who this man was, but my focus was not so much on him but on Abagail’s despair, which soon would become Amalia’s despair. Amalia did not know how to handle it. She could not handle. She wanted to cry, yet at the same time did not anyone seeing her crying.
Amalia’s heart just stopped for a second and grew silent. Her mother who was still crying gestured out to her and said “Baby. Come here.” However, Amalia did not feel like embracing her mother at all. She just wanted to be left alone. Without explaining herself, she just ran to her room like a 5-year-old and slammed the door shut. This reaction made her mother grieve even more since the only one who would embrace her was a complete stranger. However, little did Amalia know that this stranger was no stranger at all. It was Lucas Cavendish a medical assistant who worked under his father.
You see, Amalia only knew her father as an older man who grew up on a farm and retired on a farm. However, she did not know that while her dad was in twenties to late forties, he was a medical doctor. However, that is jumping too far into this story. For right now, the most important people in Amalia’s life were her family and even Jack Harlowe.
“I’ll go check up on your daughter, Mrs. Calhoun. It is the least I could do.”
While still sobbing, Abagail very slowly was able to say, “Thank you.”
[[Know more about the Calhoun's feelings|Family2]]
However just as jack knock on Amalia’s door, there was no answer. Jack tried knocking at the door again while announcing his name, but even he was told to go away.
“I don’t want to talk to anyone right now. Please go away.”
The last thing Jack wanted to hear is a lonly lass he could not help. Even though he was still a stranger, Jack really had a heart of gold. He wanted to help those out in need by doing anything to make them happy. Jack remembered that Amalia used to sing Danny Boy with her father. However, he did not know if played the song, if it would just make her sadder. Notwithstanding her own torment, Jack thought, maybe it might also act as a tribute to Amalia's father's life.
What will Jack do?
[[Play Danny Boy on the bagpipes|Danny1]]
[[Jack should just leave her alone|Family3]]
“If you ever need someone…” Jack claimed.
Amalia continued to not pay attention to jack, so he just went back downstairs. However, Amalia lifted her head up just ever so slightly before just throwing her face between her legs while sitting in a crouched position with her arms around her legs. It was not because she wanted to disrespect Jack on purpose or turn away friends. After all, for a millisecond her hopes were enlightened when she heard that Jack wanted to speak with her, but then she went back into depression closing her heart off from the rest of the world. She just did not want to talk about how distraught she felt and had a bunch of complex emotions that she did not want to share with anyone. She just wanted to close off the rest of the world, just like a child getting comfort from their own solace and stubborn price. She did not want to face the truth that her father was never going to return.
The Calhoun Farm seemed very depressed for the next couple of weeks. Everyone wanted to be left alone to sulk; however, Amalia’s mother was more willing to share her feelings with Jack and even some strangers. She was a very courageous strong woman who was willing to face the truth that her husband was not ever coming back, yet at the same time, was able to communicate her feelings to the rest of the world to release her of any stress, anxiety, or even anger. However, Amalia was just letting her feelings rot in her own deep dark dungeon of a mind. Jack would try to cheer up Amalia partaking in shenanigans by telling jokes or even performing slapstick comedy. However, he did not like the fact that Amalia was just going to close her heart off to the rest of the word.
[[How will Amalia respond? Read on|JacksProposal]]Jack knew that Amalia liked horses and wish someday that she could be a great horseback rider. One Saturday afternoon Jack urged Amalia to go horseback riding with him. He stated that they could go visit her favorite spot that she used to go every morning before her father died. He thought that maybe this gesture would get Amalia out of the doldrums. He said that it would be fun.
“You do not have to do this for me,” claimed Jack “but I really think you owe to yourself. I just do not like seeing you depressed every single day. But it is not about me.”
“Are you sure about that Jackie boy? The morning is a devil of a monster. I am not sure even if the likes of you can take it on.”
“Now you’re talking! I could beat those bastards down to size and they would not even know what is coming towards them, even if I am just fighting nature itself.”
Amalia’s spirit started to slowly be released back into the heavens to breathe once again. She was locking it in a jail cell by the likes of Lucifer himself. But she also knew that her time for morning was coming to an end. She had booked her trip out of Hell once in for all. She wanted to hear the silent music played by the breezes and the 5,000 piece orchestra that only one could hear as a child. It is not music that anyone can actually hear. It is the theme played by happiness and joy.

<<audio victory stop>>Jack got on a horse right away. He said, “This is not what you want to do.” He started to mount the horse but lost his footing on the stirrups and landed on a big piece of hay.
Amalia laughed hysterically “You’re definitely right about that. You’re kind of funny.”
Amalia tried to get up on her horse and then she fell too just like Jack.
“Now, we are even!”
Jack began to smile. However, just as jack started to gaze into her eyes, a howling sound came out of nowhere.
[[What is that sound and where is it coming from?|A Wolf 1]]
Jack could slowly hear the voice of an angel echo off the walls of Amalia’s room as he started to play the song on his bagpipes, thus making it hard to concentrate on his instrument. He was in complete disbelief because Amalia had such an astounding voice, like that of a trained opera singer. He slowly let her voice just slowly resonate through his brain and filling every single capillary in his body letting the soundwaves hold him captive, thus nullifying any sense of individuality. If anyone could have seen the look on Jack’s face that day, people might have thought that an evil spirit had taken over him and turned him into stone because he remained stationary with jaw dropped while he held his bagpipes. Jack did not want the moment to end so he could appreciate the harmonious sound stealing his heart. He listened to every note before she finally ended the song.
Jack finally walked into the archway of Amalia’s door since it was left half opened. Even though Amalia knew he was outside, she did not realize that he was standing right in front of her. She was not thinking about Jack directly; however, the song made her reflect on the relationship with her father. When she originally started to sing, you could have told that her voice was a bit soft. At that moment she was still extremely heartbroken that she had left her father. However, as she continued singing her voice became stronger because she knew she might have gained a new friend that could help her through these hard times. She was still sad, but she knew that she did not have to be anguished over the passing of her family member. It was as if she transcended through a change of mixed emotions. And it was all because of the choice that Jack made by choosing to play Danny Boy.

She did not let this one incident bother her from her daily routine.
<HR>
Once Amalia arrived at the farm, she started her daily chores around 9 am including driving the tractor, harvesting the corn crops, as well as moving the hay bales around the farm. It was just like any other day. She did not at all mind at all, as she grew up on this farm. She had never seen the city, so the simple life is what she was accustomed to. Additionally, she knew her father was extremely sick, so she did not mind pulling her weight. That is why she never complained about manual labor like spoiled rich city folk would about their first world problems. Amalia was a young modest Christian woman but she was still relatively young and inexperienced. However, if most city dwellers were to meet her, they would probably think she was older, since she handles herself like a mature 30 year old woman.
Just as Amalia was going to begin milking the cows and cleaning out the pigsty, Abagail, Amalia’s mother called her to the house.
“Hey love, would you mind stepping in the house for a wee bit. There is someone I would like you to meet.”
[[Read about her arrival home|The stranger in the house]]“In a second mother, I need to get some fresh milk…”
“That can wait until later today. We have an unexpected visitor I need you to meet.”
“Yes, Mother.”
Obediently, Amalia took the bucket used for milking cows and placed it back in the cupboard storage area. She quickly went inside the house.
Inside, she could see her mother chatting with the strange young man that she had met early today. They were sitting at the dining table discussing pleasantries. She was taken aback since she was not expecting to ever see this man again. Amalia was a bit flustered since her conscious was bothering her because of the way she had treated him earlier. However, she tried to impress her mother by acting prosed.
“This is Mister Harlowe. He will be employed by your father here on the farm.”
Little did Amalia know that they shared the same guilty consciousness.
“Well... apparently, fate has brought us back together once again. It is nice to meet you miss.”
[[How did Amalia feel seeing the stranger? |Introductions]]“You can just call me Amalia. Those no need for formalities.”
“Again?” retorted Amalia’s mother.
“Yes, I ran into Mister Harlowe while I was on my early morning walk. He was just happening to pass by while I was about to get into my car.”
Amalia was still kind of embarrassed by her behavior but did not want to make it obvious to them.
“Well, I guess, I can depend on see you around the property, Mister Harlowe….Jack.”
Amalia’s mother was really happy that they were already acquainted with one another since it made her job a whole lot easier.
“Amalia, why don’t you stay for afternoon tea? After all, we rarely get visitors in the house.”
“Mother, if you do not mind, I would rather get back to my duties. I still have lots to get done.”
“Ok. Suit yourself, Amalia.”
[[What happened next?|Jack Offers Help Cows]]Amalia politely excused herself from afternoon tea while Abagail and Mister Harlowe continued to talk a little further.
Later that day, Mister Harlowe saw Amalia and asked if he could help.
“You have been working all day. Would you mind if I helped you with cows?”
“oooh…no….that’s quite fine. I can do it myself, Mister Harlowe.”
Amalia was still not comfortable revealing her thoughts to Jack. That is why she tried to hide the fact by concentrating on her work. However, just as Amalia started to milk the cow, it let out a big MOOOO!
“Are you sure you do not any help?”
“Yes, I can do it myself, thank you. I do not need anyone telling me what to do. Now if you do not mind, I have things to attend to.”
Amalia did not want to push Mister Harlowe even further away.
Amalia released a big sigh and paused for a minute while Mister Harlowe began to walk away.
[[How was Amalia affected by her own behavior?|Regrets]]“Mister Harlowe....”
"Call me Jack.”
“Jack..." Amalia hesitated for a second. "I just wanted to apologize for my behavior earlier today.“
“There is no need to.”
“No... I want to. I should have not treated you like that. I would have not forgiven myself....”
“Say no more. I think I am the one who should apologize. I should have just let you be once I had a feeling you did not want to talk.”
“I would like to start again. My name is Amalia.”
“Nice to meet you miss. My name is Jack Harlowe.”
The young man looked back at the tortured Amalia.
[[Read about Amallia's reflections|Reflections]]Amalia sort of felt like God was retaliating and punishing her for the way she treated Mister Harlowe. Amalia smiled “Ok. Jackie boy. Let us see you work your magic.

“So you really grew up on a farm Jackie boy?”
“I honestly did. For some dumb reason, this cow is just too darn stubborn…. C’mon milk you darn cow. That is what your purpose in life is. Why won’t this darn cow milk?”
“Sure…. Jack, just yelling at the poor beast is going to make it comfortable.”
“If you are so sure of yourself, why don’t you show me if you are so good at it?” Jack hesitated quickly. “ I am sorry I did not mean to be so upfront like that and childish. Please forgive me. ”
“Well, I guess that just makes two of us." Amalia started to release a small laugh and was warming up to Jack in a less condescending manner. "No harm done at all Mister Harlowe. [[see Jack's reaction|Jacks Reaction]]“See? Ain’t nothing to it,” claimed Jack.
“You really are a miracle worker.”
“No, not really. I grew up on a farm just like you, so it only comes natural to me.”
Jack was not entirely telling the truth. While he grew up on a farm, his family did not have any livestock. However, his family would visit a dairy farm twice a month to purchase unpasteurized milk. Once the head farmer learned that he was a fellow farmer, he started to give Jack’s family a bulk discount. One day, the head farmer asked if Jack wanted to learn how to milk a cow, and that is how Jack was able to impress Amalia. Even though he had very little experience milking cows, he had a natural gift and intuition of a true farmer. Even if Jack failed at impressing Amalia, he knew he could easily adapt. \
“So, Mister Harlowe, where did your natural gift from farming come from?”
“I guess you can say, most of my family members have worked in the food industry, so things just naturally came to me.”
“So, Mister Harlowe….I mean…Jack…if you already had a farm what made you decide to work for my dad if you could have easily just stayed home with your parents?”

It was conversations like this that helped Amalia grow out of her protection shell. Even though Jack and Amalia were not exactly best friends at this moment in time, Amalia’s epiphany regarding how her unwanted behavior deepened the bond between Jack and Amalia. While Amalia kept thinking of hypothetical scenarios regarding this, it helped her to realize that not everything is as it should be. In life, humans will experience hardships that take away their trust and faith, which ultimately affects the way they communicate with others. Amalia was thinking about how she could have improved her ways of communicating with Jack on the first day they met, instead of just automatically pushing him away. Notwithstanding her own reasoning, she also thought that if everything went swimmingly, she would have never realized this about herself.

[[What did Jack have to say about Amalia's milking skills? |Version2AmaliasResponse1]] Speaking of bonding, Jack spent Thanksgiving dinner with Amalia’s family, which helped to create new memories. Little did Amalia know that this would be one of her most happiest moments for long time to come.
[[Next|next]]“You are indeed a miracle worker Amalia. I am indeed impressed by your prowess. Just go ahead and shoot me now.
“Be careful of what you wish for Jackie boy. Someone might just take you up on that offer.”
Jack looked a bit frightened by Amalia’s colloquialisms.
“I am kidding. Don’t be so daft. If it makes you feel any better, there have been moments in my life where I have been embarrassed for my behavior. I won’t go into any details. I just want to let you know that I am not exactly happy about all the decisions I have made inside my life.”
She wanted to tell Jack how she felt embarrassed about their first encounter together. However, Amalia thought that maybe the first day was not exactly the best time to pour her heart to a stranger. However, Amalia wanted Jack to feel comfortable working on the farm, so she made sure to act hospitable when she ran into Jack. Nevertheless, the idea of Jack being a stranger slowly started to fade away that day. She begun to see Jack like an old acquaintance. Hence, from time to time, she would have some conversations with Jack.
Thanksgiving dinner was the first time Jack and the Calhoun’s had some bonding time getting to know each other over the holiday. However, little did Amalia know that this would be the last time she felt happy for a long time.
[[Next|next]]Amalia could not stop crying for a good amount of time.
“Thank you, Jack. Thank you,” exclaimed Amalia repeatedly.
Her eyes were all red from crying; however, Jack seemed to have casted a magic spell that changed Amalia’s emotions.
Still crying, she embraced him “I know I can count on you. I am so sorry you have to see me like this.”
“No, it is fine. I think you truly are gifted and special Amalia. In fact, I do not see a disgraceful person. I see an Angel. I am so happy you get to be part of my life.”
The Calhoun farm was a little livelier the day after and things were almost getting back to normal. Although to say Amalia was no longer grieving her father’s death would be an understatement, her spirits were a little higher. She began to smile and help jack out everyday on the farm. Their friendship grew as the days went on. Although one might have thought that Jack was in love with Amalia, he was infatuated by her voice. However, to even suggest that Jack was in love with her, that would be too much of an assumption at this point. Nevertheless, it is true that relationships can blossom in areas when least expected and especially when a selfless person, such as Jack, comes into the lives of those who are in need. Relationships do grow that way.

<<audio sadMusic play>> Notwithstanding this change, Abagail did not much change for the next year. She would just sit in her rocking chair looking outside her window just hoping that someday her husband would return. She did not say much was slowly turning into a senior citizen, since her state of stagnation and frailty made it appear as if she was older and soon to die. Jack and Abagail would try their best everyday to get her out of her doldrums, but she would not be revived for a while.
It is amazing just to think how just one choice can change a person’s fate. However, sometimes it takes true bravery to be able to face and observe this alternate path in reality.
Speaking of change, Jack proposed to Amalia that they should just take a day off to go horseback riding.
[[Learn about Jack's proposal|JacksProposal]]“You don’t happen to own any wolves?”
“Only you.”
“No, Mrs. Calhoun…..Look”
Amalia shrieked.
Right before them was a ninety pound wolf. It had fangs that were 10 inches long. It was definitely not a husky or any family-owned dog. Its coat was a deep dark shaggy brown that erected as big as 7 inches with hazel eyes.
Amalia was scared but it was also like life stopped for a moment. It was not because she was afraid and feared for her life, although that partially may be true. It was like the heavens, or a magical force was surrounding her as she could feel the warmth of a magical breeze whispering around her trying to comfort her. The winds started to grow stronger, but they were not adversarial. It was like a spirit had just jumped next to her to meld into one. Amalia’s eyes changed into a deep light purple. Amalia thought this could have been her father trying to communicate, but it was not. It was just nature itself giving her magical powers. Although most of the spirits powers were meant for Amalia, Jack inherited some of that spirit’s courage.

A wolf approaches! Although this is the first battle that they fought together, Jack reminded that as life goes on, your battles will get harder where brute force will not win.
“Come on Doggo. Let’s see what you are really made of.”
Jack found a huge branch, broke it in half and handed a piece over to Amalia. The spirit’s breeze turned it into an enchanted stick. For a moment, Amalia almost dropped the stick when it suddenly changed weight and girth.

“What is even more astonishing are the magical sticks power. There is no way that this ordinary stick would even kill a wolf. It might injure it but definitely note kill it.”
“Well, I guess we are just gifted.”
What Jack and Amalia did not know was that this would be their first experience with alchemy. Deep down it is a philosophical idea that explain metaphysical concepts. However, what these two people were experiencing was the power of alchemy that was nurtured by nature itself and enabled the two people to turn something insignificant to something new.

Over the next few years, nothing much changed on the Calhoun farm. Amalia’s mother’s depression remained stagnant for about a year. Every day she would just sit by the window not saying much. She would just sit in her armchair staring out the window. Jack was in a peppy mood as always as he worked harvesting the crops, mowing the field with John Deer tractor, and of course, taking care of all the barn animals. He even started to cook for Amalia’s family, since Abagail did not want to do anything herself. Amalia was sort of in between moods. While she was sad like mother about her father passing away, she would rather focus on having a daily routine, along with helping jack, especially with moving some of the haybales. However, she really did not want to speak about her dad’s passing. Jack admired the fact that Amalia was a determined woman, yet he could sort of sense that she was not exactly satisfied with life. Amalia would just ignore the question every time Jack asked if she was happy by claiming he was just acting foolish.

When Amalia and jack ended up in the big city of Dublin, they decided to get jobs. Amalia got a job from the logistics company the O’ Connell group. Amalia did not want to get a job where she would be working daily in an office, so she applied to transportation agencies in the area. Her old-fashioned spirit and work ethic is what made her get the job. While automobiles and big rigs were a major part of logistic companies in the 1970’s, she asked the head manager if she could use her horse for smaller runs in the suburbs. Since her manager approved this, she was also able to transport smaller packages to local towns that did not have a huge infrastructure system. Jack, on the other hand, became a clothes designer for Herod’s, a department store whose main flagship store was in London, England. However, there was a branch in Dublin, which also satisfied his sense for a journey as well flying from Dublin to England on a constant basis.
Both worked for these companies for at least 10 years. However, they would start to grow distant as their jobs would send them off to different parts of the country.
[[Learn about how their paths seperated|Their Career Paths]]
<<audio victory stop>> Unfortunately, life has its twists and its turns. However, since he met he met a fashion designer while working for Herod’s, he got married at 29 years old. Jack has always liked Amalia as a best friend. He saw her as one of the boys. Yes, they did share some intimate moments that were special. However, Jack has always felt like Amalia was his young sister, someone to have fun with, to share feelings, or just talk about absolutely nothing while trying to give each other a bad time Nonetheless, little did he know that Amalia had slowly fallen in love with him. With her family background, she was brought up catholic, so she was told about purity and not having sex before marriage. This is exactly what she was doing.
By a chance of fate, the young designer just happened to run into Amalia over at the O’Connell group since his employer wanted some sketches of new his new designs.
“Is that Amalia?”
“Jack!”
“Oh my gosh, you’re a sight for sore eyes. How are you doing? I have not seen you for a little more than 6 years. “
“I have missed you.”
“Oh. This must be a coincidence or the work of the Gods or something. Amalia Calhoun, it is an honor to be in your presence. You must come to dinner with me tonight. I am engaged. I am so happy.”
[[Read about their reunion|Introductions Engagement Party]]
“Engaged?”
“Well, aren’t you happy for me lass?”
“Of course. You can bet on it.”
Amalia did show up to Jack’s engagement party at the department store, but more with a twist. She felt like she had competition. And she wanted to conquer him to make him hers. She was not just going to stand there and let someone take away her man. Amalia’s sense of adventure had not left her, but she was about to discover her not so sweet side, full of chaos and vice was starting to take over, like an untamed stallion she was going to rock his world. Amalia bought the most expensive $5,000 dress at Herod’s, spent $300 on a wild punk rock haircut. She made the hair stylist cut her hair very short and died it red. She wore red high heels and very skimpy red dress. She definitely did not look like the Christian woman that Jack knew.
“Hi love, I am here. Thanks for welcoming me to your fabulous house. Oh, this must be your new fiancé. Britany.”
One of the party guest greeted Amalia unpleasantly, as if she was not worthy of Jack. She stated “Oh, you must be that sad sap that Jack keeps talking about.”
[[Who is this rude party guest?|Insults Insults Insults]]
Jack then interrupted the conversation, “I am sorry for her behavior. She is my boss. She can be a bit bossy, somewhat of a predator and judgmental, if you catch my drift.”
The lady continued insulting her, “No wonder why he left you for a better woman, someone with class, someone with an educated background.”
“That will be quite enough, Mam. I know you are my boss, but please do not insult my guests.”
“Really, I did not realize there was anyone to insult, just a poor famer girl who won’t become anything. Uneducated and pathetic.”
Jack was furious about his bosses comments and tried to get her to talk with the other guests instead of insulting his best friend. Amalia would not stand for these insults. She walked up to Jack’s sassy little boss to put her in her place.
“Now, you listen here whore. Education or class has nothing to do with personality. In fact, I am quite educated. In fact, I can prove it. The fact that you could ever confuse Manet from Monet is absolutely pathetic. Monet was the famous impressionist that focused on lily pads. In fact, if Manet was here today, he might not necessarily say that I have no class. How do I know this? I do not. But he did create a famous painting of a prostitute. In your face, upper class snobs.”
“Touché. Maybe the young lady does have class after all. Ok farmer girl, what art period did this painting come from?”

“What is exactly your trials and tribulations, Amalia? Is it your trial of being low class for the rest of your life working for meaningless transportation company? I mean, just look at the way you are addressing me. You should be ashamed of yourself.”
“Well, at least, I am not a scumbag like you. And I have more character than any one of you. ”
Amalia was furious and frustrated with the way Jack’s colleagues were treating her. She felt like going off the deep end. She addressed Jack next, “I cannot believe you are choosing to be with these goons over your old friends.”

“You know what, Jack. I feel sorry for you. You were a good man. It is these mongrels that have changed you. And I just feel so sorry for you that you are just too blind to see it.”

“Well, you must be so in love with your job. All of you are just meaningless empty shells with no true passion in life.” Her voice got louder. “I feel sorry for all of you. And I am especially sorry for Brittany whose life is going to be a living Hell dealing with these bastards.”
“I think you can leave now,” claimed Brittany. “You have caused such an unnecessary ruckus and my husband won’t stand for your insults.”
Amalia said in a very sassy fashion, “You know what….Brittany? If that is your real name and it is the person who you really are….I am sorry for you. Just like Jack, you are just too dumb to see that you are being abused.”
Jack was not happy with either of the woman’s attitudes. However, if Jack were to just kick out Amalia, he may never see her again. He would therefore kick himself if he were to make such a choice. Amalia was not exactly exchanging pleasantries anymore. Her emotions were spiraling out of control. Her anguish that transpired as a result of being bullied triggered her inner demons as well as her magical alchemist powers, which would soon manifest itself. Amalia really did not mean those words, and the last thing she wanted to do was hurt either Jack or Brittany; however, her emotion drove all these powers that were ready to create Armageddon if she were to deny any of her feelings for Jack or Brittany.
[[What has happened to Amalia?|A Sudden Change]]“You must excuse me,” stated Amalia as she ran away crying heading for the nearest restroom to see if she could compose herself.
“Who was that werido,” a party guest exclaimed.
Jack ran after her into the bathroom wanting to know why she disrespected his wife. She stated that she was very sick, and she did not know how to handle her emotions.
The one thing you should know about alchemy is that its power is derived from the nature around the person. If the host is happy, the environment around them is very pleasant. However, when an alchemist is upset or extremely heart broken, the firing rage of madness exhibits itself in nature as well in the shape of nature, but an unexplained phenomenon that humans cannot understand. Amalia knew that this was happening and was trying to protect Jack by telling him to leave.
A sudden earthquake began to shake the apartment store and suddenly and thick smoke-like substance came out of nowhere.
“Jack, you are in danger. Please leave me now!”
[[Find out what is going on|Deadly Transformation]]
“Fine. If we cannot talk like civilized people, I see no point in convincing you now………….have it your way….” Jack hesitated “I cannot be with you now. You know that. But whatever it is, we can work this out together. You are my best friend, Mila.”
“Jack you may die. Please, Jack, I am begging you, please leave now. I cannot control this power that is within me.”
Amalia slapped Jack.
Little did Jack know that there was a foreign presence filling the room. All this time he thought that she was referring to her emotional state of being, or maybe she was referring to the fact that maybe she doesn't want him to see Amalia in this sad and rather depressing mood, which would torment his soul. However, she was not talking about this at all.
As humans, it is only natural to protect the ones we love, shielding them away from harm, even if this force was from one's own self. Friends fight, and sometimes, they have no control over what they say. However, in other instances, some people who struggle with anger issues know who they are, so sometimes they warn their friends to leave them alone. It is not to shove them away. It is an act of protecting their loved ones so that they can avoid anyone being hurt emotionally.
However, in Jack and Amalia's situation, it was not just a normal example of everyday emotional trauma. Out of Amalia's powers, an alien sentinent conscience began to materialize out of nothingness.

Who was the original author of the song Danny Boy?
[[Ernestine Schumann-Heink|WrongAnswer]]
[[Frederic Weatherly|Victory1DannyBoy]]
[[Eric Clapton|WrongAnswer2]]
Unfortunately, that is a wrong answer. Ernestine Schumann-Heink was an opera singer who recorded the first version of Danny Boy. However, Frederic Weatherly is the original composer. He composed it after the death of his father and only son.
In a way, it may be of no coincidence that Amalia sang this song. While she used to sing it with her father, it has become part of popular culture to have it performed at funerals. Maybe Amalia found solace at the same time since he helped her to grieve yet feel at peace.

“Wow. Thanks Mister Harlowe. You really have a gift dealing animals. Your technique was so much better than mine. I am not sure what I would do without you. “
Mister Harlowe smiled with satisfaction and joy looking directly at her saying that it was no problem.
“Yep. That is right. Do you think you can talk more about it sometime?”
“Sure.”
Just as they entered the house, Amalia’s mother said that supper won’t be ready for another 5 hours that Amalia should show him around the house and to the guest room where he will spend the night while he works here during the week. Jack agreed to help Amalia’s mother around in the kitchen by cleaning out the guts of the turkey and washing it. She really started to like Jack as much as Amalia. While all the food had been prepped for cooking, Amalia and Jack rested on the couch.
“So the place we were talking about earlier today, that is my favorite spot. It’s just really special since no one can bother me and it helps me to sit and meditate.”
“Do you think I could join you one of these days?”
[[what did Amalia thnk about this?|ShowTheSpot]]“You are coming on a little too fast, Mister Harlowe.”
“Oh. Pish posh,” Amalia’s mother said in disagreement. “Show the boy around for pete’s sake. He’s going to be around here for quite awhile.”
“OK…MOTHER.” Amalia did not like her mother interrupting in her affairs and disagreed with her behavior of trying to force a relationship with them too. She thought it was very annoying. Amalia did like Jack as a person, but Amalia wanted to run her own life. “Fine. It is an outing, but it is definitely not a date.”
“If you do not want it to be a date, it doesn’t have to be, necessarily. You can just show me around. We can just go off an adventure. If you want, I can also take care of the family dog too for a walk.”
“I’d like that.” She chuckled a bit “but there’s no family dog.”
Abagail, Amalia’s mother interrupted “Speaking of showing people around, would you be kind lass and show the gentleman to his room where he will be staying?
As they walked upstairs, Amalia asked, “So while you are staying here with us, will you miss your family back at home?”
[[Will Jack miss his family?|JacksResponseFam]] However, Amalia was only fooling herself. In the end, she just wanted the farm to be a joyful place, so she sucked in her feelings about her dad, disguising her happiness with duty. Nevertheless, she did miss the first day when she first met Jack as a stranger and how he taught her how to mount a horse. Just like her mother, she would sometimes look out to the sunny sky; however, unlike her mother, Amalia would end up smiling at the sky reminiscing about her sense of adventure. Nevertheless, she kept it to herself, like it was a fantasy, like something out of a romance novel. Most of the time Amalia would just ignore Jack when she gazed at the sky, but he would never pressure her. However, one day Amalia spoke what was really on her heart.
“Have you ever wondered what is out there, Jack? Have you ever just wanted to just go out there and go explore the world?”
“Yeah”
“It is a silly thought. With only Mom here, there would no one to take care of the farm.”
Amalia was missing the thrill of the unknown. She did not like having to work on the farm every single day, nor did she want to retire as a farmer. She wanted to go off to the city and travel the world. Deep down, she was not satisfied at all, yet responsibility kept her excitement , recklessness, and curiosity at bay.
[[Continue Reading about her need for adventure|True Feelings 2]] Notwithstanding her duties, there would come a time when she and jack would depart on an adventure. This journey was able to happen since Amalia’s mother was remarried at the age of 65. She married a man who was not as playful as Amalia’s biological father. He was very strict, yet he took care of her mother. Her new stepdad was wealthy, so he was able to hire more agricultural workers. With all the extra help, Jack was no longer required, even though her stepdad would have been more than happy to keep him on the farm or make him the butler.
One day Amalia was speaking to her mother to see if she was able to leave the farm.
“Mother, I pray you won’t get upset. But I feel like my life’s calling is not here.”
“I knew that all along child. You were always a reckless one after all. I knew it would be hard to keep you here. You have my blessing. Just make sure Jack is there to take care of you wherever you go.”
“Mother, you are the best!”
“And you have my blessing too,” said her stepfather. “Since you are a 25-year-old woman, I cannot keep you here either. Godspeed to you both, my children.”

“Yes, everything the mirror said was true. And I did you for it. But I would not be able to live with myself if I hated you for the rest of my life just because of my selfishness. Will you forgive me?”
“Yes. If it was anyone else, I would have them pay for all this damage. But seeing as you are very special to me. A very special lady. I do not want anything to break us apart.
Amalia grew up that day. However, this was the very first day she learned more about her powers and how they harm other humans if she is not careful. However, she vowed to one day be able to control all her emotions so that it would never get the best of her again. She learns to accept things and started to really make friends with Jack and Brittany, starting all over again.
Yes, Amalia did go off on another adventure and fall in love one day, but that is for another episode.
